"In the end, we’ll all become stories" - Margaret Atwood While every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information contained here-in, this website is a basis for genealogy hobbyists only, and should not be considered an authoritative historical text. Further serious study should be done from the sources shown. Anyone using this website as a source, please cite it. This short morphing clip depicts the descendancy of Doners from Elder John on down to my family.. Other morphs are spread throughout the tree. The amount of work these two men did on all of our behalves is staggering, and we are all in their debt. In an era predating computers and the internet, they rummaged in Archives, dug in Land Offices, and travelled this monstrous gorgeous country simply looking in the phone book for the right surnames before giving them a call. Harry Doner arrived on my parents’ doorstep when I was about 12 years old and had driven from Ontario to B.C. in an old sedan, with his dog and a back seat full of files. A hardcover book was published (The Doners in Canada - Printing House Ltd. Thornhill Ont. 1974) and in Harry and Harold’s honour, I continue their tradition by bringing their work into the digital age. Since then I have been updating and keeping it as complete as possible, but need your help. As of the end of Feb. 2007, there were 14,910 direct descendants (& their spouses) of the first Doner couple to settle in Markham 200 years ago. So, I implore you to PLEASE contact me whenever a birth, marriage, death, or special event happens in your family’s life, so that it can be preserved for future generations. Photos, old or new, are particularly welcome. What is normal & boring to us today may well be cool & fascinating to our descendants. (Look! It’s an actual gasoline-fired automobile!) Due to genealogy etiquette, information on living persons is not posted on the internet, however you may contact me directly for a family password, about any specific questions you might have, or how you may be related to someone else in the tree. Please sign the Guest Book (under ’Home’ tab at top) if you like what you see. The little coloured boxes beside the names indicates a specific lineage as noted on the bottom of that page. Light blue boxes signify a direct Doner descendant. There are a few different family colour codes, one being silver to signify direct descendants of John Alden (1598-1687), who arrived in America aboard the ’Mayflower’ in 1620. When I tried to run a report for Mayflower descendants, it was 168 pages long. So, this affects many common families in this tree. Watch for the silver colour code for Mayflower descendants. Keepers of the Tree to date: Elder John Doner (1821-1906) Harold Ford Doner (1918- ) - Book Co-Author Harry Doner (1895-1982) - Book Co-Author Perry Doner (1958- ) - Website Initiator (2007) "To forget one’s ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root." - Chinese Proverb For those wondering about royals & gods being on the website, it is through my mother’s side and not the Doners. The lineages shown include some created for English kings that go back into mythology and gods, which I included for those interested. The English kings loved to hear that they descended from gods, and the most outlandish were published by a byzantine monk in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in ~6th Century, showing an ancestry going all the way back to Adam & Eve. It’s for interest only, and take it with a grain of salt. Below is a counter for the countries visiting this website. It didn’t get included until there were 5,000 visitors, but it allows you to see the distribution since then. Click on graphic to expand.
